Hubie Smith began his remarkable career as a high school basketball coach nearly four decades ago, dedicating his life to the sport and the development of young athletes. His tenure included significant stints at both boys' and girls' high school levels, showcasing his versatile coaching abilities and his commitment to excellence in basketball education. Smith's journey in high school basketball coaching notably featured a 19-year period at Bartlett High School, where he left a lasting legacy by leading the boys' basketball team to a triumphant victory in the 2001 TSSAA Boys State Basketball Championship in Class AAA.

Beyond his high school coaching career, Smith also contributed to collegiate basketball, assisting with the men’s basketball teams at Belmont University and Lipscomb University. This experience further enriched his coaching profile and allowed him to bring a wealth of knowledge back to high school sports. His dedication to basketball coaching was evident when he took on the role of head girls' basketball coach at Ensworth High School. There, he achieved over 100 wins and secured two TSSAA State Championships in 2010 and 2013, affirming his prowess in leading teams to state-level success.

In 2013, Smith assumed the role of head boys' basketball coach at Brentwood Academy, where he continued to build his legacy. Under his leadership, the team won four consecutive TSSAA Boys State Basketball Championships from 2015 to 2018, marking an extraordinary period of dominance in TSSAA basketball history. Despite being the runner-up in the 2019 TSSAA State Championship in Division II, Class AA, his teams have accumulated over 700 career victories, a testament to Smith's enduring success and strategic acumen.

Throughout his career, Hubie Smith received numerous accolades, including coach of the year honors on district, region, and state levels. His induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2019 serves as a fitting tribute to his outstanding service to TSSAA and his significant impact on Tennessee high school basketball.
