Melvin Black, born on January 14, 1936, built an impactful career that spans decades in the realm of high school sports, blending roles as an educator, coach, and official with great distinction. His commitment and service to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) culminated in a well-deserved induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2014, recognizing him predominantly for his invaluable contributions as an official.

Black's professional journey in athletics began as a teacher and coach, spending nine years at Burt High School in Clarksville and Pearl High School in Nashville. During his tenure, he passionately coached football, basketball, and track, laying the foundation for his later endeavors in sports officiation. His initial foray into sports administration and officiation commenced in 1962 when he became a member of the Tennessee High School Athletic Association (THSAA), which administered black schools prior to integration. In this period, he gained experience by officiating basketball games under the THSAA.

A significant turn in Black's officiating career occurred in 1963 when he registered with TSSAA as a basketball official. His dedication to sport and exemplary officiating skills allowed him to leave an indelible mark on TSSAA-sanctioned events. Over the years, Black officiated over 1,000 football games, more than 900 baseball games, and attended more than 900 track meets at both the high school and college levels. His expertise and fairness on the field were further recognized as he was appointed to work in one TSSAA football state championship and one boys’ state basketball championship, marking notable highlights in his officiating career.

Melvin Black's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame was not just a testament to his personal achievements but also served as a beacon of inspiration for future generations in sports officiation.
