Dan Schlafer

Dan Schlafer's career, culminating in his 2013 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, is a testament to his dedication to high school athletics and education in Tennessee. Born on January 29, 1952, Schlafer began his involvement in high school education and athletics in 1974. Over the years, he served in multiple roles including teacher, coach, and administrator, showcasing his versatility and commitment to the development of high school sports.

Initially, Schlafer taught and coached for 21 years, during which time he coached football at several schools including Cumberland County High School, Knoxville Catholic School, Tennessee School for the Deaf, Harrison Chilhowee Baptist Academy, and West Greene High School. His passion for coaching was matched by his excellence in educational leadership. He became the Principal at Tellico Plains High School after his extensive coaching career.

Under his leadership, Schlafer's contributions were recognized when he received the prestigious TSSAA A.F. Bridges Award as Principal of the Year in 2003. His leadership extended beyond individual schools as he served on the Cumberland County Board of Education, where he was Chairman for three years and Vice-Chairman for one year.

Schlafer's involvement with the Tennessee School Boards Association (TSBA) further highlighted his influence in educational athletics. He served as President of the TSBA in 2010 and represented TSBA as an Ex-Officio member of the TSSAA Legislative Council and Board of Control. His role was pivotal in shaping policies and strategies that influenced high school sports across Tennessee.

In 2006, Schlafer shifted his focus to program development as the Federal Programs Director for Monroe County Schools. Yet, his enduring legacy is most visible in his service to TSSAA, where he played a significant role in advocating for high school athletics and education until his well-deserved induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2013. His career is a model of service and dedication to high school sports and education in Tennessee.
