W. A. “Buddy” Pate, Jr., embarked on a distinguished career in education and athletics in 1967, first leaving his mark at Eagleville School, where he served as a teacher and coach for nearly a decade. His tenure saw remarkable success in both girls’ and boys’ basketball, with the girls’ team amassing an impressive 187–54 record and the boys’ team a solid record of 140-100 under his guidance. In 1976, Pate continued his coaching journey at Riverdale High School, focusing on girls’ basketball and achieving a commendable 228–170 record. His efforts culminated in leading the team to become the 1979 TSSAA State Runner-Up, boasting an almost perfect season at 31–1.

Transitioning from coaching to administration in 1995, Pate became the principal of Eagleville School, a role he held with distinction for nine years until 2004. During his leadership, Pate demonstrated a steadfast commitment to athletics, significantly contributing to the school’s extracurricular landscape. Under his tenure, Eagleville School earned the A. F. Bridges State Award of Excellence twice, first in 1998–99 and again in 2002–03, highlighting the school’s commitment to fostering positive sportsmanship and athletic excellence.

Pate’s contributions to the athletic community, particularly through his service to the TSSAA, were profound. In 2002, he was recognized by the TSSAA for Distinguished Service, and the following years saw both him and Eagleville School receiving further accolades for their excellence in sports and administration. His efforts to initiate new athletic programs and advocate for improved athletic facilities reflected his dedication to enhancing the student-athlete experience.

In 2005, W. A. “Buddy” Pate, Jr.’s illustrious career and invaluable service to high school athletics were celebrated with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, marking him as a laudable figure in Tennessee’s sporting history. His legacy as a coach, administrator, and advocate for youth athletics continues to inspire.
