Bill Derrick

Bill Derrick embarked on a distinguished coaching career that spanned over three decades, beginning in 1959 and culminating in his retirement in 1995. His tenure was marked by significant accomplishments and contributions to high school athletics across various institutions, ultimately earning him a revered spot in the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2005.

Derrick commenced his journey at Father Ryan High School, serving from 1959 until 1983. In his role as Head Basketball Coach from 1959 to 1969, he guided his team to the Region Champions title in 1965, followed by a notable appearance in the TSSAA State Tournament the same year, boasting a record of 198 wins to 67 losses. Transitioning to Head Football Coach between 1976 and 1983, Derrick's leadership resulted in a record of 69 wins against 19 losses, attaining three State Playoff berths and competing in three Bowl Games, reflecting a win rate exceeding 78%.

Derrick later transferred to Lawrence County High School from 1984 to 1987, where as Head Football Coach, he achieved the status of District Co-Champions in 1986 and led the team to the State Playoffs with a 7-4 record. His tenure at Hendersonville High School from 1987 to 1995 was highlighted by leading the football team to the State Playoff Semi-Finals in 1988, amassing a record of 47 wins to 39 losses.

A trailblazer, Derrick's 1963 Father Ryan Fighting Irish squad was celebrated for being the first Nashville Interscholastic team to integrate, underlining his commitment to inclusion and progress within high school sports. Although he officially retired in 1995, Derrick's dedication to coaching persisted as he continued to mentor young athletes at various schools including Battle Ground Academy and William James Middle School. His overall record and playoff achievements across three different schools underscored his adaptability and prowess as a coach. Derrick's legacy is enshrined in the TSSAA Hall of Fame, a testament to his profound impact on high school athletics in Tennessee.
