Buck Coatney, born on July 7, 1962, carved out a distinguished career in high school athletics, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2020. Recognized for his contributions as a coach, Coatney’s legacy is marked by his outstanding tenure as the head football coach at Fulton High School in Knoxville from 1992 to 2010. During these 19 seasons, his leadership not only fostered a culture of excellence but also resulted in a commendable overall record of 144 wins against 91 losses.

Coatney’s teams shone brightly on the state level, capturing the TSSAA State Championships three times, in 2003, 2004, and 2006, showcasing their dominance and his aptitude as a coach. These triumphant moments were further highlighted by near victories, with the team finishing as state runner-up in both 2002 and 2007. Beyond state titles, Coatney's coaching acumen earned him wide recognition. He was honored as the Tennessee Titans Coach of the Week and Coach of the Year in 2004, a testament to his influence and success in Tennessee high school football.

His contributions to football and education were further acknowledged through awards such as the National Football Foundation’s Amateur Football Award, the Associated Press Coach of the Year, and East Tennessee Coach of the Year. His repeated recognition as State Coach of the Year underscored his enduring impact within the TSSAA and the broader high school sports community.

Beyond the field, Coatney dedicated his expertise to developing future generations, taking on a role as a specialist in the Career and Technology Education Department for Knox County Schools.
