Bobby Alston

Bobby Alston, born on August 17, 1954, embarked on a distinguished career in athletics and education, predominantly at Memphis University School (MUS), starting his tenure there in 1977. His journey in coaching football began in 1980 and reached a milestone in 1998 when he was named the head coach. Aside from football, Alston showed versatility by serving as the head track and field coach since 1983. His commitment to student development was further demonstrated during his tenure as Dean of Students from 1994 to 1999. In 1997, he expanded his influence at MUS by assuming the role of Athletic Director.

Alston's coaching career is marked by significant achievements, including a commendable football coaching record of 180 wins and only 76 losses up until his 2020 TSSAA Hall of Fame induction. His leadership led the football team to four TSSAA State Football Championships in 2004, 2005, 2008, and 2009, and saw the team finish as state runner-up three times in 2012, 2013, and 2018. His contributions to track and field are equally notable, with his teams winning five TSSAA State Championships and two team relay championships.

Alston's service to TSSAA has been multifaceted. He was honored with a TSSAA Distinguished Service Award in 2000, indicating early recognition of his contributions. He was an active member of the TSSAA regional coordination efforts and served on the TSSAA State Track and Field Advisory Committee. His energy and dedication also earned him the TSSAA A. F. Bridges Award three times, highlighting his role as a pivotal figure in Tennessee high school athletics. In recognition of his remarkable career and impact on high school sports, Bobby Alston was fittingly inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2020, forever cementing his legacy within Tennessee's athletic and educational communities.
