Charles Mitchell

Charles Mitchell, born on February 19, 1946, navigated a remarkable career in education and athletics before being inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2012. Mitchell's career was distinguished by a three-decade tenure at Pickett Co. High School, where he left an indelible mark as both a girls’ and boys’ basketball coach.

Mitchell's coaching prowess was evident as he led his teams to six Region Championships and six Sub-State contests, earning five trips to the TSSAA State Tournament. His commitment and strategic acumen culminated in close to 400 career victories, underscoring his effectiveness as a coach. Notably, Mitchell achieved the pinnacle of high school sports success by winning State Championships with both the girls (1977) and boys (1990) basketball teams.

Throughout his career, Mitchell's contributions to sports and education were recognized through numerous awards. He was honored as Coach of the Year in Tennessee three times, a testament to his excellence and leadership in high school athletics. Beyond coaching, he dedicated his career to the educational advancement of Pickett Co. by serving as Principal for two years and then as Superintendent of Pickett Co. Schools for four terms.

After retiring in 1999, Mitchell continued to contribute to the sport he loves by volunteering to help his son, Eric, a former Mr. Basketball winner at Pickett Co. (1990) who currently coaches at White Co. High School in Sparta. Mitchell's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame was a fitting recognition of a career marked by devotion to student-athletes, consistent success on the basketball court, and enduring service to the TSSAA and the broader educational community in Tennessee.
