Calvin Short, born on May 4, 1941, had a distinguished career in education and athletics, culminating in his 2000 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His professional journey is a testament to his dedication to sports and the development of young athletes in Tennessee.

Short's notable career began at Gallatin High School, where he served as a teacher and coach from 1976 to 1993. During his tenure, he made an indelible mark on the high school's athletic program, especially in football. Under his guidance, Gallatin High School's football team achieved remarkable success, securing the TSSAA State Championship three times in 1978, 1989, and 1992. The team also finished as state runners-up three times in 1982, 1987, and 1991, demonstrating consistent excellence and competitiveness at the state level. His leadership not only led to significant victories but also established a legacy of district and region championships nearly every year but two during his tenure. With an outstanding record of 205 wins and only 30 losses, Short's influence on high school football in Tennessee was profound.

After nearly two decades of coaching, Short transitioned into an administrative role, serving as the principal of Portland High School from 1993 to 1998. This phase of his career further showcased his commitment to education and the well-being of students beyond the athletic field.
