Bert "Chig" Ratledge was a revered figure in Tennessee's high school sports scene, contributing significantly to athletics and education throughout his career. Born on January 16, 1928, Ratledge dedicated over two and a half decades, from 1954 to 1981, to serving as a teacher and coach at Loudon High School. His coaching tenure at Loudon was marked by remarkable achievements and a lasting impact on the community and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA).

Under Ratledge's guidance, the Loudon High School football team flourished, securing an impressive record of 167-123-9. His expertise and leadership propelled the team to TSSAA AA State Championships three times—in 1969, 1974, and 1975—cementing his legacy within TSSAA and high school football in Tennessee. Beyond football, Ratledge also contributed to the school's basketball program, showcasing his versatility and commitment to nurturing young athletes in multiple sports.

Ratledge's accolades include coaching the Tennessee All-Star Football game on three occasions, notably serving as the head coach in 1970. This recognition highlighted his prowess and respected status among his coaching peers and the athletic community at large. His influence extended beyond the playing field. A plaque at Loudon High School poignantly describes him as "a fine coach, a finer man," encapsulating the profound respect and admiration held for him by students, players, and colleagues alike.

In honor of his significant contributions and lasting legacy, the Loudon High School football stadium was named "Chig Ratledge Stadium," a fitting tribute to a man who gave so much to his community and the sport. Ratledge's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2000 served as a testament to his exemplary service to high school sports in Tennessee, celebrating a career that was not only about winning games but also shaping characters and inspiring those around him.
