Jerry Mathis, celebrated for his significant contributions to high school sports, was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2004, marking a high point in an illustrious career that spanned over three decades. Born on January 2, 1943, Mathis began his teaching and coaching career in 1967 at Tullahoma High School, where he remained until his retirement in 1999. Over these thirty-two years, he built an impressive legacy, particularly in baseball and cross country running.

His tenure as a baseball coach was highlighted by leading Tullahoma High School to two TSSAA State Championships in 1974 and 1990. Additionally, his teams were runners-up five times (1973, 1986, 1997 in baseball, and 1981 in cross country), showcasing his ability to consistently coach teams to high levels of performance. Mathis amassed approximately 600 wins in baseball, a testament to his skill, dedication, and impact on the sport. Beyond his team's achievements, Mathis played a crucial role in the development of individual players, with 101 of his athletes receiving college scholarships and eight being drafted into professional leagues. His prowess was further recognized through coaching the 1995 Tennessee All-Star baseball team and winning a gold medal as a Sportsfest head coach.

In addition to his coaching career, Mathis served on the TSSAA Board of Control from 2006, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to high school athletics beyond his retirement. Furthermore, he became the Athletic Director for Tullahoma City Schools in 1999, where he continued to influence the athletic and personal development of young athletes.

His induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2004 was a fitting acknowledgment of his contributions not only to Tullahoma High School but also to the broader Tennessee athletic community. Jerry Mathis's career is marked by his dedication to excellence, the development of young athletes, and his lasting impact on high school sports in Tennessee.
