James Ellis

James Lloyd "Jimmy" Ellis, born on February 22, 1936, carved out an esteemed career in education and athletics, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2004. His journey began as a teacher and coach, spans over two decades, with his early years (1958-1959) rooted at Huntland High School. He then nurtured young minds and athletes at Petersburg High School in Petersburg, TN, from 1959 to 1964, before moving to Lincoln Central High School from 1966 to 1979, and briefly returning to coaching at Lincoln County High School in 1995 to 1996. While at Lincoln Central, Ellis led the girls’ basketball team to remarkable achievements including District Champions in 1972-73, Region Champions in 1975-76, and reaching the TSSAA Sub-State in 1975-76 and 1976-77.

Ellis transitioned into administration, serving as principal of Petersburg High School from 1964 to 1966. His leadership skills further thrived as he took on the role of Assistant Principal for twelve years (1979-1991) at Lincoln County High School, where he also dedicated twelve years as Athletic Director. His profound impact on high school sports was not confined to his local community; Ellis contributed significantly at the state level. From 1989 to 1991, he was a member of the TSSAA Board of Control, an essential governing body for high school athletics in Tennessee. Additionally, he played a key role in the TSSAA TOPS Program, further demonstrating his dedication to the development and governance of high school athletics across Tennessee.

Ellis’s career presents an exemplary model of commitment to education and athletics, highlighted by his unwavering service to the TSSAA, making his 2004 Hall of Fame induction a well-deserved honor that celebrates his contributions and dedication to sports and students alike.
