Paul Caywood

Inducted 1993

Paul Caywood, a distinguished figure in Tennessee high school athletics, had a career that exemplified commitment, leadership, and excellence across various roles, culminating in his prestigious 1993 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Born on January 11, 1907, Caywood began his professional journey as a teacher and coach at Lexington High School from 1930 to 1941. During this period, he made a significant impact on the football field, amassing an impressive record of 93 wins, 34 losses, and 6 ties. His dedication to sports and education seamlessly transitioned into a principal role at Lexington City School, catering to kindergarten through eighth grade, from 1941 to 1974—a tenure that spanned 33 years and highlighted his commitment to shaping young minds.

In addition to his administrative and coaching duties, Caywood's service to the TSSAA was equally noteworthy. From 1948 to 1966, he was an official for the association, further embedding himself in the fabric of Tennessee's high school athletics. Furthermore, his contributions extended beyond the field and into the realm of mentorship, as he served as an assistant coach to Gill Gideon, a fellow TSSAA Hall of Fame member and former TSSAA Executive Secretary, between 1955 and 1968. Paul Caywood's legacy was immortalized by the city of Lexington in 1968 when it named the new modular school facility the Paul G. Caywood Elementary School in his honor, a fitting tribute to a man whose life's work significantly enriched Tennessee's educational and athletic landscape. Caywood passed away on June 24, 1990, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire and resonate within the TSSAA community and beyond.
