Richard Welch

Inducted 2007

Richard Welch embarked on an illustrious career as a principal, teacher, and coach, spanning over three decades, leaving an indomitable mark on high school sports, particularly in basketball, in Tennessee. Born on March 17, 1932, Welch’s foray into coaching commenced in 1956 at Westview Elementary School where he coached both girls and boys basketball teams for a decade until 1966. His tenure at Westview was marked by an impressive overall coaching record of 500 wins against just 100 losses, with his teams clinching 43 trophies.

Welch’s journey continued at Trezevant High School from 1966 to 1978, where he primarily coached girls basketball. Under his leadership, Trezevant’s girls basketball team emerged as a formidable force, making nine appearances in Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) State Tournaments and winning state championships in 1974 and 1976. Welch further broadened his coaching repertoire with stints at Atwood High School (1982-1983) coaching boys basketball and later at West Carroll High School (1983-1991), where he returned to coaching girls basketball, leading the team to six Region Tournament appearances and reaching the sub-state round twice.

Throughout his career, Welch coached a total of 1,488 games, achieving an astounding 81% winning percentage. His dedication and prowess earned him nine Coach of the Year honors and led to his induction into the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame in 2002. Beyond coaching, Welch contributed significantly to the TSSAA through various capacities, including hosting basketball camps and serving as an announcer at West Carroll home basketball games after his retirement. His remarkable contributions were recognized posthumously with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2007, marking a fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to nurturing young athletes and serving the TSSAA with utmost dedication. Richard Welch passed away on January 3, 2006, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire.
