Wayne Hobbs, born on April 19, 1944, embarked on his educational and athletic career directly after his valedictory graduation from Jones High School in 1962. His journey commenced in 1965 at Cornersville School, where he dedicated himself to coaching both boys' and girls' basketball teams as well as the football team until 1966. Following a notable stint as the Director of Special Education for Giles County between 1966 and 1970, Wayne returned to his passion for teaching and coaching. From 1970 to 1975, he served at Jones High School, exclusively coaching the football team before moving to Huntland High School in 1975. During his time there until 1976, he coached both the girls' basketball and football teams, showcasing his versatile coaching skills.

In 1976, Wayne transitioned into an administrative role, embarking on a 27-year tenure as a principal at Beech Hill High School until 1978 and subsequently at Richland High School until his retirement in 2003. Concurrently, he assumed the role of Athletic Director at Richland High for 25 years, starting in 1978. His commitment to sports and education did not end with his retirement. Hobbs continued to impact the community and the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) by engaging in several key roles. He served on the TSSAA Hall of Champions Steering Committee, contributed six years to the Tennessee Secondary Committee of SACS, and was a dignified recipient of the TSSAA Distinguished Service Recognition in 1998.

In addition to his extensive contributions to high school sports and administration, Hobbs also played a pivotal role within the TSSAA as a member of the Board of Control in 1995. His service and dedication to the association and its values were pivotal in fostering sportsmanship and excellence within Tennessee's high school athletics. Wayne Hobbs' illustrious career was fittingly celebrated with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2007, marking him as a significant figure in Tennessee's athletic and educational history.
