Danny Joe Young, born on May 22, 1951, embarked on a remarkable coaching career beginning in 1975 at Snowden High School. His journey through the world of athletics saw him significantly influencing track and field across Memphis, TN, culminating in his posthumous induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2023. As a dedicated coach, Young's career spanned over three decades, touching the lives of countless athletes at various schools.

In 1980, Young shifted his coaching talents to Northside High School, where he led the girls' track and field team until 1984. During his tenure, he coached the Northside team to a TSSAA State Championship in 1981, marking the beginning of his legacy. He later coached football and boys' track and field at Bellevue Jr. High School in 1984-85 before moving to East High School. From 1985 to 2007, Young not only coached girls' track and field but also junior high girls' basketball, illustrating his versatile coaching abilities. Under his guidance, East High School's girls' track and field teams triumphed, winning seven TSSAA State titles in 1989, 1990, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999, and 2001. His exceptional coaching skills were further recognized as he earned the title of State Coach of the Year seven times and Region Coach of the Year 18 times. Furthermore, his accolades included being named Best of the Preps Coach of the Year twice and receiving a nomination for National Coach of the Year.

Concluding his illustrious career at Melrose High School from 2008 until 2011, Danny Joe Young's legacy is marked by his undeniable impact on youth athletics and his significant contributions to the TSSAA. Through his dedication and passion for coaching, Young not only shaped champions on the track but also influenced countless young lives, earning him a revered place in the TSSAA Hall of Fame.
