Jim Whitby, born on June 2, 1944, etched his name into the annals of high school sports history through his remarkable coaching career. With the zeal of a true educator and mentor, Whitby dedicated nearly three decades to shaping young athletes in the competitive sphere of basketball within Tennessee. His journey commenced at Lake County High School, where for nine years he honed his coaching skills and strategies, laying the foundation for what would become a legendary career. His tenure there, however, was merely a prelude to his most notable achievements at Obion County Central High School.

For 19 years, Whitby served as the head boys' basketball coach at Obion County Central High School. It was here that his coaching prowess truly shone, guiding his teams to over 850 career wins, a monumental milestone that underscores his expertise and dedication to the sport. Under his leadership, his teams made three appearances in the TSSAA State Championship, showcasing their skill and determination on basketball's grandest stage, at the state level.

Whitby's crowning achievement came in 1986 when he led his team to the TSSAA Class AA State Championship. This victory not only highlighted his exceptional coaching abilities but also had a personal touch, as his son, Cannon, played on the championship-winning team. Displaying outstanding performance, Cannon set five state tournament records and scored an impressive 45 points in the championship game, a testament to the Whitby legacy in Tennessee basketball.

In recognition of his significant contributions to basketball and his remarkable career achievements, Whitby was honored with the Basketball Coaches Association of Tennessee Lifetime Achievement Award. Further solidifying his legacy, he was inducted into the Obion County High School Hall of Fame, an accolade that celebrates his enduring impact on the school and its sports programs.

In 2018, Jim Whitby's illustrious career was fittingly commemorated with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. This honor served not only as recognition of his personal achievements and contribution to high school basketball but also highlighted his dedication and service to TSSAA. Through decades of committed service, Jim Whitby left an indelible mark on Tennessee high school sports, embodying the spirit of excellence and mentorship.
