Gary Rankin, a distinguished name in high school football coaching, was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2011, marking a culmination of over three decades of contribution to high school athletics. Born on February 13, 1953, Rankin embarked on a coaching journey that spanned 35 years and amassed unprecedented achievements along the way. His career started with stints at Warren Co. and Smith Co., laying the groundwork for his legendary status. It was at Riverdale and Alcoa High School, however, where his coaching prowess truly shone.

Rankin's leadership at Riverdale saw the team capturing the 5A state championships four times (1994, 1997, 2001, 2004), showcasing his ability to nurture and guide young talent to the pinnacle of high school football success. Transitioning to Alcoa High School in 2006 marked a new chapter for Rankin, where his teams maintained an unparalleled winning streak, securing the state championship each year since his arrival until the time of his Hall of Fame induction. This remarkable feat was a testament to his strategic acumen and motivational skills.

Throughout his illustrious career, Rankin accumulated over 300 career victories, placing him fifth in the state for career coaching victories at the time of his induction. His exceptional leadership contributed to nine TSSAA State Championships, underlining his significant impact on high school football in Tennessee. Beyond his success on the field, Rankin played an instrumental role in shaping the lives of young athletes, coaching 13 Mr. Football Award winners and one Gatorade Player of the Year, while also receiving numerous "Coach of the Year" honors.

In addition to his coaching responsibilities, Rankin served as the Athletic Director and Vice Principal at Alcoa High School, further highlighting his dedication to the development of student-athletes and his broader service to TSSAA. His induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2011 was not just recognition of his winning record, but also of his enduring commitment to excellence and the positive influence he had on high school sports in Tennessee.
