David R. Rhodes, recognized for his significant contributions to high school sports, was inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2006. Born on June 4, 1951, Rhodes embarked on a career that deeply influenced Tennessee high school athletics until his passing on November 10, 2005.
Rhodes' coaching career spanned 14 years from 1974 to 1988, primarily at Perry County High School. He led the girls’ basketball team from 1975 to 1982, achieving an impressive 111-69 record. Under his guidance, the team clinched three District Titles, two Region Titles, made three TSSAA Sub-State Appearances, and twice reached the Class 1A State Semi-Finals. His stewardship of the boys’ basketball team from 1975 to 1988 was equally remarkable, amassing a 265-93 record. The boys' team won eight District Titles, four Region Titles, made seven TSSAA Sub-State Appearances, and appeared in four TSSAA State Tournaments, winning the State Championship in 1976 and 1977.
After his coaching tenure, Rhodes served as the Superintendent of Perry County Schools for 17 years, from 1988 until his death in 2005. His administrative achievements included being named South Central Superintendent of the Year in 2004 and holding significant positions within the Tennessee Organization of School Superintendents (TOSS), including TOSS President in 2002.
Rhodes' earlier achievements also distinguished him as an athlete. He attended the University of Mississippi on a full basketball scholarship from 1969 to 1973, leading the Southeastern Conference in Free Throw Percentage in 1972. Before his collegiate success, he was a four-year starter for the Perry County Vikings basketball team, where he received many accolades for his performances.
David R. Rhodes' induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2006 celebrated not only his coaching success but also honored his broader service to Tennessee high school athletics through his roles as a coach, teacher, and school administrator. His legacy continues to inspire those involved in high school sports across Tennessee.
