Carl Matherly, who was born on April 1, 1922, had an illustrious career that spanned decades in the educational and athletic realms, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1989. His journey began in 1948 as he embarked on a sixteen-year tenure as a teacher and coach at Lynn View High School in Kingsport, TN. During this time, he dedicated himself to various roles, including head basketball coach, head baseball coach, assistant football coach, and athletic director, showcasing his multifaceted talent and commitment to youth athletics.

In 1964, Matherly transitioned to an administrative role, taking up the mantle of principal at Lynn View High School, a position he held until 1980 before moving to Sullivan South High School where he served until 1987. His contributions to the educational field are marked by his 23 years of unwavering commitment to guiding young minds as a principal.

Parallel to his career in education, Matherly's service to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) is particularly noteworthy. From 1964 to 1987, spanning the entirety of his time as a principal, he was a steadfast member of the TSSAA Board of Control. His leadership qualities were further recognized when he served as the TSSAA President from 1978 to 1987, a period that saw significant developments within the organization. During his tenure on the Board of Control, TSSAA saw three different executive directors and relocated its office from Trenton, Tennessee, to Hermitage, Tennessee. These changes were pivotal for the growth and modernization of the TSSAA, with Matherly playing a crucial role in the organization’s evolution.

Matherly’s contributions to athletics and education were further acknowledged when he was inducted into the Northeast Tennessee Hall of Fame, cementing his legacy as a key figure in Tennessee's athletic and educational communities.
