Charles Maurice Kelly, born on December 24, 1927, built an exemplary career as a coach and educator over 40 years, from 1950 to 1990. His journey began at Mathiston High School in Mississippi in 1950, moving to Ripley High School in Ripley, Tennessee, a year later. Kelly's tenure at Ripley High School was marked by significant achievements as both head football and baseball coach. His leadership on the football field led to a record of 132 wins, 66 losses, and 2 ties, including 8 post-season appearances which demonstrated his ability to cultivate and harness athletic talent. As the head baseball coach, Kelly excelled with a record of 302 wins against 94 losses and earned 8 district titles, setting high standards of excellence and competitiveness.

Beyond coaching, Kelly's role as Athletic Director for 36 years at Ripley High School, from 1954 to 1990, underscored his dedication to sports administration. In this capacity, he was instrumental in fostering a supportive and thriving sports environment for both students and coaches. His contributions to high school sports were acknowledged through numerous accolades, including being named Big Ten Coach of the Year in 1963 and 1965, honored as “Man of the Year” by the Fraternal Order of Police in 1981, and his induction into the Northwest Junior College Hall of Fame.

In 1992, Charles Maurice Kelly's lifelong dedication to sports, education, and the betterment of youth athletes was fittingly recognized with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His commitment to TSSAA not only enriched the lives of countless students but also left an indelible mark on Tennessee's secondary school athletics scene. By the time of his retirement, Kelly had not only shaped an impressive personal legacy but had also significantly contributed to the ethos and success of TSSAA.
