John Farr, born on October 25, 1934, embarked on a distinguished career that profoundly impacted high school wrestling in Tennessee. In 1958, he began a fifteen-year tenure as a teacher and coach, initially at Red Bank High School until 1969, before moving to Chattanooga Central High School until 1973. Farr is widely celebrated for pioneering one of the first public school wrestling programs in the state, an endeavor that started at Red Bank High School.

Under his guidance, Red Bank's wrestling team clinched three TSSAA State Wrestling Tournaments consecutively from 1963 to 1965. Farr's innovative spirit led him to construct a wrestling facility in the school basement, showcasing his commitment to building a robust wrestling program. In 1961, he organized the first Invitational Wrestling Tournament, known as the "Red Bank Invitational," setting a precedent in the state's wrestling competitions.

Farr's contributions extended beyond coaching and facilities management. He established the first Wrestling Officials’ Association in Tennessee, ensuring a standardized and fair competition environment. His role as the first state tournament director during the inaugural TSSAA State Wrestling Tournament in 1965 further cemented his legacy within the TSSAA community.

Additionally, Farr shared his knowledge and enthusiasm for wrestling through articles published in "Amateur Wrestling News" and "Scholastic Wrestling News." His commitment to fostering wrestling talent continued as he initiated a wrestling program at Chattanooga State Community College. Recognized as the "Father of Wrestling" in Tennessee, Farr's influence extended to officiating at the NCAA Wrestling Finals, showcasing his expertise on a national stage.
