John Johnson

Inducted 2001

John Johnson Jr., born on January 31, 1921, embarked on a coaching career that spanned over three decades, leaving an indelible mark on high school football in Tennessee. His tenure as a teacher and coach at Manassas High School from 1947 to 1981, culminated in a remarkable record and an enduring legacy. Johnson's coaching prowess was evident through the achievements of his football teams, winning 8 City Championships and 3 League Championships, amassing a stellar record of 212 wins, 102 losses, and 15 ties.

Throughout his coaching career, Johnson's teams dominated the field, securing 6 Negro Prep League Championships in the years 1947, 1948, 1952, 1959, 1960, and 1961, and making a significant mark by winning the MIAA in 1971. His outstanding leadership and mentorship led him to become the second prep coach in Shelby County to reach the milestone of 200 victories. Notably, Johnson's influence extended beyond the high school level, with four of his players being drafted into professional football, showcasing his ability to develop talent at the highest level.

Johnson was known for his unique coaching style; he was soft-spoken yet stern, demanding excellence from his players without raising his voice. This approach not only earned him respect on the field but also left a lasting impact on those he mentored. His dedication to his teams and the sport was recognized posthumously with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2001. Unfortunately, John Johnson Jr. passed away on June 19, 2000, but his contributions to high school sports in Tennessee, specifically his service to TSSAA and his significant achievements in football coaching, have solidified his legacy as one of the most revered figures in the history of Tennessee high school athletics.
