Ed Henley

Inducted 2007

Ed Henley, born on April 5, 1935, left an indelible mark on school athletics, culminating in his 2007 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Henley's remarkable journey began as an educator and coach at Westwood Junior High School, where for five years, he guided young athletes in football, track & field, and basketball. His dedication to fostering youth development extended beyond the classroom and the field, as he served on the Manchester City School Board of Education from 1975 to 1981.

Transitioning from teaching and coaching, Henley embarked on a remarkable 50-year tenure as a TSSAA official from 1956 to 2006. His commitment to school sports was exemplified through his extensive officiating career in basketball, where he contributed to numerous district tournaments and was a prominent figure at region and sub-state tournaments. His expertise and fair play on the court helped shape the competitive spirit and sportsmanship of countless student-athletes across Tennessee.

Beyond his TSSAA involvement, Henley was a well-respected figure in his community. He owned and operated the Henley Propane Gas Company, contributed as the vice-president of Coffee Co. Bank since its establishment in 1975, and engaged in local governance as a Manchester City Alderman from 1971 to 1975. Henley's community service extended through various roles, including positions with the Manchester Jaycees, Rotary Club—where he received the 1978 Outstanding Service Award—the Coffee County Central High School Alumni Association, and the Coffee County Election Commission. Additionally, Henley supported the athletic community by sponsoring officials for camps and holding leadership positions in both the Coffee County Athletics Foundation and the South Central Basketball Officials Association.

Ed Henley's enduring legacy is built on his dual contributions to the TSSAA and his unwavering dedication to enhancing his community and the lives of young people through sports and service.
