Joe H. Allen

Inducted 1994

Joe H. Allen's exceptional career in sports spanned over three decades, primarily dedicated to nurturing young athletes in Tennessee. Inducted into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1994, Allen's contributions to high school sports, particularly in basketball, football, volleyball, and tennis, were monumental.

Born on May 26, 1936, Allen began his illustrious career in 1963 at Donelson High School, where he remained until 1971. His tenure at Donelson was marked by significant achievements including guiding the boys' basketball team to Junior High City Championships in 1961 and 1963, a Regional Championship in 1964, and ultimately securing the TSSAA State Championship that same year. Under his mentorship, the football team clinched a Clinic Bowl Victory in 1965, and the tennis teams dominated Division Championships continuously from 1959 to 1971.

Transitioning to McGavock High School from 1971 to 1993, Allen's influence continued to shine. His leadership led the boys' basketball team to multiple District League Championships in 1972, 1986, and 1993, NIL League Championships in 1972 and 1978, District Tournament Championships in 1972, 1974, 1978, and 1990, Sub-State Wins in 1972 and 1976, and another TSSAA State Championship in 1976. Not relegating his attention solely to boys' sports, Allen brought the girls' volleyball team to a City Championship in 1980.

Allen's involvement with TSSAA went beyond coaching; he was deeply committed to the TSSAA TOPS Program, contributing significantly towards the betterment of high school sports in Tennessee. His coaching prowess at Donelson Christian Academy in 2003-2004 and recognition in multiple Halls of Fame further underscore his remarkable career. These accolades, alongside his mentorship of all-state players, a Moss Oliver Award player, and professional athletes, exemplify not only his coaching excellence but his dedication to fostering talent and sportsmanship among young athletes.
