William Woodruff

William Woodruff, born on July 19, 1929, was a remarkable individual whose career spanned over four decades as an educator, coach, and administrator. His journey began in 1959 when he became a teacher and coach at George Washington Carver High School, a position he held until 1984. Over the course of his 25-year tenure, Woodruff made a significant impact in the school's athletic department, especially within the football program. He led his football teams to over 100 victories, claiming three division championships along the way. His achievements on the field earned his teams a coveted spot in the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) State Playoff in both 1977 and 1978. Beyond football, Woodruff also contributed to the school's golf program, showcasing his versatility and dedication to sports.

After retiring from coaching, Woodruff didn't stray far from the world of education and sports. From 1995 onward, he served as an Assistant Principal at Messick Vocational Technology Center in Memphis, extending his influence on young minds and budding athletes. His role also involved supervising teachers in Health/Physical Education out of the South Area office in Memphis, highlighting his commitment to physical education and health.

Woodruff's contributions to sports and education were widely recognized. He was a member of various associations, including the American Football Coaches Association, and received numerous accolades such as the Vanguard Club Coach of the Year (1976-1978) and the Joseph P. Gattas MIAA Coach of the Year (1978). His impact was further acknowledged by the establishment of an annual athletic scholarship named in his honor by the alumni and former football players of George Washington Carver High School.

In 2006, William Woodruff's lifelong dedication to sports, education, and TSSAA was rightfully celebrated with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. This accolade underscored his enduring legacy as an educator, coach, and administrator who profoundly impacted the lives of countless students and athletes throughout his 44 years of service.
