W.C. Johnson, born on July 23, 1931, carved a distinguished path in the realms of education and athletics, culminating in his 2006 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His career, spanning from 1957 to 1986, showcased his dedication as a teacher and coach, and later as an assistant principal and principal at Mt. Pleasant High School.

Johnson began his coaching tenure at Hay Long High School in Mt. Pleasant in 1957, where for thirteen years, he led the basketball and baseball teams. In 1970, he transitioned to Mt. Pleasant High School, continuing his coaching journey until 1986. His contributions to basketball were particularly noteworthy, as evidenced by his teams securing 5 district championships, 7 district runner-ups, 3 region championships, and 5 region runner-ups. Johnson's commitment to excellence was further demonstrated through his teams' 8 TSSAA State Tournament and sub-state appearances.

Apart from his coaching responsibilities, Johnson served as an assistant principal at Mt. Pleasant High School from 1972 to 1985, before stepping up as the principal from 1986 to 1996. His leadership extended beyond administrative roles; he played a pivotal role in community sports and education, marked by his involvement with the Mt. Pleasant High School Fellowship of Christian Athletes, the National Education Association, Tennessee Education Association, and more. His recognition as the Mid-State Basketball Coach of the Year in 1982, among other accolades including his induction into the Martin Methodist College Sports Hall of Fame in 1999, underscores his profound impact.

Johnson's legacy was immortalized in 1996 when the Mt. Pleasant High School Gymnasium was dedicated to him, commemorating a career that not only championed athletic excellence but also fostered community and educational development. Through his service to TSSAA and his various roles within the educational system, W.C. Johnson left an indelible mark on Tennessee's school sports landscape.
