Charlie Baxter's illustrious career as a teacher and coach, culminating in his 2006 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, serves as a testament to his exceptional contribution to high school athletics in Tennessee. Born on July 11, 1950, Baxter dedicated 28 years of his life, from 1975 to 2003, to fostering excellence, sportsmanship, and success among young athletes.

Beginning his journey at Unicoi County High School in 1975, Baxter quickly established himself as a formidable force in high school baseball, leading his teams until 1997. Under his guidance, the baseball team soared to great heights, amassing an impressive overall record of 591 wins against 175 losses. This era was marked by an unprecedented dominance in local and state competitions, as his teams clinched 14 conference championships, 14 district titles, and 14 region titles. The Baxter-led teams achieved TSSAA State Tournament Runner-Up titles five times and were crowned TSSAA State Champions four times in 1984, 1991, 1992, and 1995.

Not content with leaving his mark on just one sport, Baxter transitioned to coaching softball from 1999 to 2003. He replicated his baseball success, leading his teams to a dominant overall record of 213 wins to just 21 losses, sweeping five district and region titles each, and earning a TSSAA State Championship in 2002.

Throughout his career, Baxter's leadership and coaching prowess were recognized through numerous awards, including being named Watauga Conference Baseball Coach of the Year from 1984 to 1995 and Tennessee All-State Baseball Coach of the Year in 1984, 1991, 1992, and 1995, among many others. His impact extended beyond the field, as he played a significant role in the lives of countless young athletes, guiding them to not only athletic excellence but also teaching vital life lessons along the way.
