Ferrell Loveless

Inducted 1994

Ferrell Deason "Dee" Loveless, born on March 24, 1918, enjoyed a distinguished career as an official across multiple sports, culminating in his 1994 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His dedication to officiating in the state of Tennessee was unparalleled, spanning over 45 years from 1946 until 1991. Loveless's commitment to the TSSAA was notably diverse, covering 22 years in basketball from 1946 to 1968, an extraordinary 45 years officiating football from 1946 to 1991, and 14 years in baseball and softball from 1978 to 1992. His contributions to sports officiating were not limited to his on-field presence, as he was highly respected for his integrity, knowledge, and the level of respect he commanded from players, coaches, and fellow officials alike.

Beyond his remarkable career with the TSSAA, Loveless had a notable background in sports beginning in his high school years. He played football at Lewis County High School, where his team from 1933 to 1935 lost only one game and went undefeated and unscored on in 1935. His talent in baseball led him to play for the Chattanooga Lookouts in the final month of the 1939 season. Although a war injury in World War II ended his professional baseball career, Loveless continued to contribute to the sport, playing and managing for the semi-professional Monsanto Chemical Maulers for 12 years.

Loveless's service to sports extended to multiple honors. He was inducted into the Nashville Area Old Timers Baseball Association Hall of Fame and received a 30-year service plaque and medal in 1975. Recognizing his six-decade-long contribution, spanning from the 1940s to the 1990s, he was named the “Prep Official of the Year” in 1987 by the Lawrenceburg Quarterback Club. Ferrell "Dee" Loveless's legacy is defined by his enduring commitment to sports and his significant contributions to the TSSAA.
