Guy Buchanan

Guy Buchanan, born on September 13, 1926, dedicated his career to shaping young lives through sports and education. His journey began in 1951 when he embarked on a teaching and coaching career that spanned over four decades until his retirement in 1993. Buchanan spent the entirety of his 42-year professional life at Waynesboro High School, where he influenced countless students and athletes.

In his tenure as a coach, Buchanan focused on girls’ basketball from 1952 to 1985, leading the team to notable achievements including an undefeated season through district, region, and sub-state play in 1973-74, marking the school's first TSSAA State tournament appearance. With more than 500 wins and 27 winning seasons under his belt, his contributions to high school basketball were significant. His commitment to athletics extended beyond basketball as he also coached football from 1951 to 1967 and from 1978 to 1981, during which his team became TVAC Champions.

Buchanan's role at Waynesboro High School was not limited to coaching; he also served as a principal for six years and as an athletic director for 34 years. His dedication to the school system and his influence in sports were recognized when the Waynesboro High School Football Facility was named "Guy H. Buchanan Stadium" in 1983.

Before his illustrious career in education and coaching, Buchanan played football at Middle Tennessee State University (MTSU) for four years, being part of the undefeated 1949 MTSU team. He was also the founder of the Mid-Tenn Basketball Camp, further exemplifying his passion for nurturing young talent.

In acknowledgment of his outstanding service and contributions, Buchanan received several awards including the Jaycee Distinguished Service Award in 1974, TSSAA Distinguished Service Recognition in 1980, and ultimately, his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1994. This induction served as a crown for his dedication, not only to the Waynesboro community but to the TSSAA at large. Guy Buchanan's legacy, rooted in his commitment to youth sports and education, left an indelible mark on Tennessee high school athletics.
