The school was established as the Randall Cole Industrial School on February 20, 1885. Became known as the Tennessee Industrial School (TIS) in 1887 when the State of Tennessee assumed its operation. Renamed Tennessee Preparatory School in 1955. The high school ceased classes in December 2002.
