Baxter Seminary traces its origin to the 1890s when Bloomington College was established by H.C. and C.W. Coleman. In 1896, the school burned and was reopened in Red Boiling Springs as Wesleyan Memorial Academy.  In 1908, the Methodist Episcopal Church assumed responsibility for the school and moved it to Baxter where it was renamed Baxter Seminary.  The school was led by Dr. Harry L. Upperman from 1923-1957 and ultimately sold to Putnam County in 1959 to become Upperman High School.
