Richard Pickell

Richard Pickell, born on November 26, 1940, embarked on a distinguished career in education and coaching that spanned over three decades, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2008. Pickell's coaching journey began in 1964 at Oliver Springs High School, where he served as the boys' basketball coach until 1971. He then moved to Harriman High School, continuing his coaching career in boys' basketball until his retirement from coaching in 1995. Throughout his tenure, Pickell demonstrated exceptional leadership and skill, amassing an impressive overall coaching record of 561 wins to 360 losses. His achievements include guiding his teams to five district championships, five region championships, and making three appearances in the TSSAA State Tournament. Notably, in 1995, under his guidance, Harriman High School won the TSSAA State Championship, marking the pinnacle of his coaching career.

In addition to his coaching duties, Pickell contributed to TSSAA as an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Harriman High School for four years. His impact extended beyond the basketball court, shaping the lives of countless student-athletes through his roles in educational administration and athletic leadership.

Upon retiring from coaching in 1995, Pickell continued his service in education until 1999. He received numerous accolades, including being named Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association Class AA Boys Basketball District Coach of the Year three consecutive times (1993, 1994, 1995). Further honoring his contributions, Harriman High School dedicated its gymnasium as the Richard D. Pickell Gymnasium in 1988. A member of the 1958 Lenoir City High School State Championship team, Pickell's legacy was recognized with his induction into the Lenoir City High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2004.

Pickell's unwavering dedication to high school athletics and his significant contributions to TSSAA over 40 consecutive years of attendance at the Boys State Basketball Tournament underscored his passion for sports and his commitment to nurturing young talent. His career was marked by both personal achievements and his profound influence on the lives of students and athletes, embodying the spirit and values celebrated by the TSSAA Hall of Fame.
