Gene Trotter

Gene Trotter, born on June 17, 1933, embarked on a distinguished 38-year career as a teacher and coach beginning in 1955, culminating with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1996. Trotter's early years were dedicated to Dresden High School (1955-1956), where he contributed significantly as an assistant football coach and led the boys’ basketball team to a remarkable 27-5 record, claiming the district champions title in 1956.

Afterward, Trotter moved on to Lakeview Junior High (1958-1959) and then McEwen (1959-1964), before making a lasting impact at Waverly Central High School from 1964 until his retirement in 1995. It was at Waverly Central where he truly made his mark, especially in girls’ basketball, amassing a record of 584-142. His teams achieved 19 district titles, 5 region titles, reached the TSSAA State Tournament Final Four once, attained state runner-up in 1967, and won the prestigious TSSAA State Champions title in 1968. Trotter also achieved success in girls’ golf, leading his team to a TSSAA State Championship in 1988, and in football, posting a commendable record of 76-46-2.

Besides his coaching accomplishments, Trotter also served as the principal of Waverly Central High School for nine years (1986-1995). His dedication to the TSSAA extended beyond coaching and administration; he was an influential member of the TSSAA Board of Control for six years (1989-1995), showcasing his commitment to high school sports across Tennessee.

In addition to his sports-related achievements, Trotter was honored by being selected to the Waverly Central High School Coaches' Hall of Fame and, following his retirement in 1995, continued to contribute to education as the Chairman of the Humphreys County School Board. His legacy extends beyond the myriad of games won, through his service and commitment to enhancing high school athletics within the TSSAA framework. Gene Trotter's Hall of Fame induction in 1996 stands as a testament to his lifelong dedication to student-athletes and his significant contributions to high school sports in Tennessee.
