Benny Monroe's career in the field of education and coaching spanned over 32 remarkable years, from 1965 to 1996, leaving an indelible mark on high school sports in Tennessee. Starting his endeavor at Maryville Junior High School in 1965, Monroe quickly moved to Maryville High School in 1966. By 1972, he took charge at McMinn County High School, where he initiated his journey in football coaching, securing a record of 33 wins against 20 losses.

However, it was at Cleveland High School, starting in 1979 until his retirement in 1996, that Monroe's coaching genius truly flourished. Under his guidance, the football team experienced unprecedented success with a record of 178 wins and 33 losses. Demonstrating extraordinary leadership, Monroe led his team to 19 State Playoffs, clinching the TSSAA Class 4-A State Championship three times in 1993, 1994, and 1995, and coming close as runners-up in 1982 and 1992. His expertise was not limited to football alone; under his stewardship, Cleveland High School's track & field team also reached commendable heights, winning the 1992 TSSAA Class AAA State Championship and securing the runner-up position in 1993.

Monroe's outstanding contributions were recognized with 26 Coach of the Year Awards and an overall head coaching record of 211 wins to 53 losses. Notable accolades include his tenure as TSSAA All-Star Football coach in 1974 and 1975, along with multiple district and regional Coach of the Year titles. His remarkable achievements culminated in a 54-game winning streak, a testament to his exceptional coaching abilities.

Monroe's service to TSSAA was further honored with the Distinguished Service Award in 1993. In recognition of his unparalleled contributions to high school sports, Cleveland High School named its stadium “Benny Monroe Stadium” in his honor, a legacy that was further cemented with his induction into the National High School Football Hall of Fame in 1997 and subsequently into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1999. Benny Monroe's illustrious career not only showcases his devotion to sports but also highlights his profound impact on the lives of countless young athletes in Tennessee.
