Juanita Merrell

Juanita Merrell, born on July 29, 1935, had a distinguished coaching career that spanned over three decades, culminating in her induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2002. Beginning her teaching and coaching journey in 1959 at Springfield High School, she dedicated herself to nurturing female athletes in a variety of sports until her retirement in 1991. Merrell's early career saw her coach girls' basketball at Springfield High School, then move to Azalia Junior High School in St. Petersburg, Florida, where she added volleyball to her coaching repertoire. Returning to Tennessee in 1963, she continued coaching girls’ basketball at Grundy County High School before making a significant impact at Kirkman High School in Chattanooga from 1964 until her retirement.

Merrell's tenure at Kirkman High School was marked by unprecedented success, particularly in volleyball, where under her guidance, the team amassed an incredible record of 382-29 from 1964 to 1979. The team's accomplishments included winning 81 consecutive matches between 1976 and 1978 and securing four consecutive TSSAA State Championships from 1976 to 1979. Furthermore, she led her teams to three undefeated seasons, showcasing her remarkable coaching skills and leadership.

Her contributions to volleyball extended beyond coaching, as she played a pivotal role in the TSSAA's decision to sanction volleyball as a state-recognized sport. Serving as a District and Region Chairman and Tournament Director from 1976 to 1979, Merrell's efforts contributed significantly to the sport's growth and recognition in Tennessee. Her teams' success in winning the first four TSSAA State Volleyball Tournaments set a high standard for competitiveness and excellence.

Merrell’s excellence was acknowledged through multiple awards, including being named the “Scrappy Moore Volleyball Coach of the Year” for four consecutive years from 1976 to 1979 and receiving the Honor Award by the Tennessee Association of Health and Physical Education in 1985. Her induction into the Chattanooga Sports Hall of Fame further solidified her status as a highly respected figure in Tennessee sports. Juanita Merrell's legacy is highlighted by her unwavering commitment to developing young athletes and her significant contributions to high school sports in Tennessee, making her induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2002 a fitting tribute to her illustrious career.
