Billy Mayfield

Billy Mayfield embarked on a distinguished 43-year career in education and coaching beginning in 1960, culminating in his 2003 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. His journey started at Marshall County High School (1960-1961), followed by a tenure at Cornersville High School (1961-1965), a brief period at Connelly Junior High School (1965-1966), a return to Cornersville High School (1966-1968), and a long-standing position at Giles County High School (1968-2003). Mayfield left a significant mark on girls' basketball, accumulating an impressive 681 wins. His leadership led to two TSSAA State Championships in 1980-81 and 1981-82, five TSSAA Final Four appearances, and a TSSAA Class AA State Runner-Up title in 2001-02.

Mayfield’s dedication and success did not go unnoticed, as he was honored as District Coach of the Year five times (1980-81, 1981-82, 1989-90, 1992-93, 2001-02) and received the Tennessee Athletic Coaches Association (TACA) Coach of the Year award three times (1985, 1990, 1993). Additionally, he was chosen to coach the 1995 Tennessee All-Stars, highlighting his reputation and respect among his peers.

Beyond the court, Mayfield's contributions were recognized by his induction into the Martin Methodist College Hall of Fame in 2000 and by receiving the Exchange Club’s "The Book of Golden Deeds Award." Among his notable achievements was guiding his team to a 48-game winning streak, underscoring his exceptional coaching ability and the dominant performances of his teams.

Billy Mayfield's career is a testament to his commitment to excellence, leadership, and service to the TSSAA. His 2003 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame serves as a fitting tribute to his lifelong dedication to coaching and the profound impact he had on high school sports in Tennessee.
