Turney Ford, born on December 9, 1915, embarked on a distinguished career as a teacher and coach, spanning 44 years from 1939 to 1983. His journey commenced at Battle Ground Academy, where he coached from 1939 to 1951, before moving to Smith County High School. At Smith County High School, from 1951 to 1969, Ford's leadership as a football coach led the team to 7 post-season bowl games, including 4 consecutive appearances in the prestigious Tobacco Bowl. His prowess wasn't limited to football; as a basketball coach, he steered his team to 2 TSSAA State Tournament appearances, showcasing his versatility and dedication to nurturing young talent.

Ford's journey continued at Gordonsville High School from 1969 until his retirement in 1983. Here, he left an indelible mark, amassing 264 victories as a football coach, leading 4 unbeaten teams, and securing 10 post-season appearances. His success extended to the basketball court as well, achieving the school's first-ever berth to the TSSAA State Tournament and accumulating over 500 wins across 3 TSSAA State Tournament appearances.

His athletic legacy was not only forged through his coaching career but also during his time as a student-athlete at Vanderbilt University, where he lettered in all 3 sports from 1935 to 1939. In recognition of his monumental contributions and impact, the Gordonsville High School Football Field was aptly named "Turney Ford Field" in his honor.

Ford's dedication and service to the TSSAA earned him a well-deserved induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1986, a testament to his enduring influence on high school sports in Tennessee. Turney Ford passed away on April 27, 1990, leaving behind a legacy that transcends time, immortalized by his profound impact on the lives of countless young athletes.
