Buford Bible

Buford Bible, born on January 15, 1905, embarked on a remarkable career in education and sports, culminating with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 1990. His journey commenced in 1927 when he began teaching and coaching at Coal Creek High School in Lake City, TN, leading to a tenure there until 1930. He subsequently moved to Jefferson City High School, serving from 1930 to 1935. Here, he distinguished himself as the boys' basketball coach, securing 5 district titles and reaching the 4th TSSAA Basketball State Tournament in 1931.

His career reached new heights at Knoxville High School, where he coached from 1935 to 1951. During this period, Bible led his teams to three TSSAA Basketball State Championships in 1939, 1941, and 1951, while also finishing as runners-up in 1938 and 1950. Following this success, he transferred to Knoxville East High School in 1951 and continued there until his retirement from coaching in 1961. Besides his coaching responsibilities, Bible also served as the principal of Knoxville East High School from 1960 to 1967, demonstrating his leadership both on and off the court.

Beyond his direct contributions to schools and the TSSAA, Bible's impact extended to various aspects of education and sports. He was instrumental in coaching James “Doc” Simpson, another TSSAA Hall of Fame member, and was recognized for his service in mathematics at the University of Tennessee and his advocacy for teachers at the state legislature.

His legacy was further honored through various awards and distinctions, including his induction into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame in 1983 and the establishment of the Buford Bible Award in 1988, underlining his exceptional dedication to student athletes and the educational community throughout his career.
