Donnie Graham

Inducted 2023

Donnie Graham's illustrious career, marked by dedication and service to the TSSAA, culminated in a fitting tribute with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2023. Born on February 13, 1947, Graham embarked on a distinguished journey in the world of Tennessee high school athletics that spanned several decades, touching the lives of countless student-athletes along the way.

Graham began his career in education and sports in 1970 as a teacher and coach, quickly establishing himself as a fixture in the high school sports scene. He coached both boys’ and girls’ cross country and track and field, as well as football at West High School in Knoxville, demonstrating a passion for athletics and a commitment to student athletes. His coaching career extended to Bearden Jr. High and High School, where he led teams in football, girls basketball, and track, earning respect and admiration from his peers and players alike.

His leadership skills were further recognized through his roles as an Assistant Principal and Athletic Director at Halls High School, eventually becoming the Principal in 2003 until his retirement in 2005. However, retirement did not diminish his involvement with high school athletics. Graham continued to serve as a TSSAA track and field official for over 30 years, contributing significantly to the sport's development in the state.

Graham was actively involved in various capacities within TSSAA, including being a member of the Track and Field committee, serving as the Meet Director for the Regional TSSAA meet in Knoxville, overseeing the Decathlon and Pentathlon as a regional director, and acting as the head starter for district and regional track meets in East Tennessee. Perhaps most notably, he was the starter and "voice" of the TSSAA state track meets, a role in which his presence and announcements became a hallmark of the events.

In recognition of his tireless service and contributions to high school athletics, Graham was bestowed with a TSSAA Distinguished Service Award. His induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2023 is not just an acknowledgment of his extraordinary career but also a celebration of his lifelong dedication to nurturing and shaping young athletes across Tennessee.
