Shelby Miller

Inducted 2020

Shelby Miller's distinguished career, marked by an unwavering dedication to officiating sports at the high school level, culminated in a well-deserved 2020 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Born on September 16, 1945, Miller embarked on a journey that would see him become an integral figure in Tennessee's sporting community, particularly within the realms of football and basketball.

For more than half a century, Miller served as a TSSAA football and basketball official, highlighting not only his passion for the games but also his commitment to fostering fair play and sportsmanship among young athletes across the state. Starting his officiating career in basketball, Miller dedicated 25 years to the court before retiring in 1990, during which he presided over 16 district, 15 regional, and 11 sub-state basketball tournaments. His expertise and fair judgment earned him the honor of officiating at the prestigious TSSAA Girls State Basketball tournament in 1981 and the TSSAA Boys State Basketball tournament in 1984.

However, Miller’s contributions were not confined to the hardwood. In football, he became a fixture in the playoffs, being selected to work these critical games for 42 consecutive years. Notably, Miller officiated in five TSSAA State Football championships (1985, 1992, 1995, 2008, and 2019). Remarkably, he was still actively officiating football as of his induction year, having served as Head Linesman at the 2019 BlueCross Bowl.

Miller’s dedication to excellence and the positive influence he exerted over countless games and athletes were recognized through numerous accolades, including the TSSAA A. F. Bridges Award for Official of the Year in his region. His service extended beyond the confines of the TSSAA, evidenced by his induction into the Carter Co. Sports Hall of Fame in 2016 and the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame in 2017.

Shelby Miller's illustrious career and his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2020 reflect the lasting impact of his commitment to high school sports in Tennessee. His legacy as an official who served with integrity and a spirit of sportsmanship will undoubtedly inspire future generations.
