Don Sutton

Don Sutton, born on August 24, 1932, devoted more than three decades of his life to officiating sports, contributing significantly to the Tennessee Secondary School Athletic Association (TSSAA) and the broader athletic community. He was recognized for his dedication and service with his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2011, under the category of Official.

Starting in 1975, Sutton registered with the TSSAA and commenced an esteemed officiating career that spanned until 2008. During this period, he served as an official in multiple sports, including baseball, basketball, football, and volleyball. His officiating expertise was not limited to high school sports; he also made significant contributions at the collegiate level across these sports, showcasing his versatility and commitment to athletic fairness and excellence.

Sutton was an esteemed member of the Memphis Officials Association in baseball, basketball, and volleyball, further indicating his active engagement and leadership within the sports officiating community. His dedication to football was especially notable as he served as a member and president of the Mid-South Officials Association, illustrating his leadership and respect in the sporting world.

In recognition of his outstanding contributions and achievements, Sutton received a TSSAA Distinguished Recognition and an A. F. Bridges Award. His impact extended beyond the fields and courts as he was inducted into two more Halls of Fame: the Memphis Amateur Sports Hall of Fame and the Henry County Sports Hall of Fame.

Throughout his career, Sutton was chosen to officiate at numerous district, region, and sub-state contests. His excellence as an official was exemplified as he worked the state finals in baseball four times, football twice, and volleyball three times, a testament to his expertise and the high regard in which he was held. Don Sutton's career reflects a profound commitment to sportsmanship, excellence, and leadership in the TSSAA.
