Don Grider

Don Grider, a distinguished figure in Tennessee high school athletics, had his legacy officially immortalized with his 2010 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Born on November 22, 1939, Grider's storied career spanned over three decades, beginning in 1961 and concluding in 1993, the year of his retirement. Throughout these years, he left an indelible mark as both a teacher and a coach at South Pittsburg High School, where he helmed the football team from 1969 to 1993.

Under Grider's guidance, the South Pittsburg football team flourished, amassing an impressive record of 188 wins, 88 losses, and 1 tie. His tenure was marked by consistent success, including 12 Conference Championships, 7 Region Championships, and 5 District Championships. However, a standout achievement was leading his team to victory in the 1969 TSSAA Class A State Championship, making them Tennessee's inaugural Class A state champions in football.

Grider's teams were renowned for their postseason prowess, reaching the state quarterfinals 11 times and the semifinals 8 times. Moreover, under his leadership, South Pittsburg emerged as the state runner-up thrice (1974, 1985, 1986). Throughout his coaching career, Grider's teams scored a total of 5,432 points while only conceding 2,804 points. His coaching excellence was recognized with 16 of his players being named All-State, and personally being named Coach of the Year an impressive eleven times.

Aside from his coaching duties, Grider also served as the Athletic Director for South Pittsburg High School for 23 years, from 1969 to 1993. His multifaceted contribution to TSSAA and high school sports in Tennessee showcases a legacy of excellence, leadership, and mentorship. Grider passed away on May 4, 2007, but his impact on high school athletics and TSSAA endures, celebrated through his well-deserved Hall of Fame induction.
