Al Cate, an esteemed figure in Tennessee's high school sports arena, was celebrated for his distinguished career upon his 2010 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Born on February 25, 1939, Cate's journey began at Memphis Central High School, where from 1968 until his retirement in 2004, he committed himself as a teacher and coach for over three and a half decades. His tenure at Memphis Central was marked by illustrious achievements across various sports. As the football head coach from 1971 to 2004, Cate led his teams to an impressive record of 195-155, alongside multiple district and city championships, not to mention thirteen state playoff appearances.

Cate's expertise was not confined to the football field. He headed the basketball team between 1971 and 1973, securing a respectable 88-64 record and earning the title of District Coach of the Year in the 1971-1972 season. Beyond the court, his leadership in baseball from 1975 to 1991 culminated in a district championship in 1981. Additionally, his role as tennis head coach between 1968 and 1974 was highlighted by a boys' state championship in 1969, evidencing a winning record across all the sports he coached.

Beyond coaching, Al Cate's administrative acumen as an Athletic Director shined through, serving Memphis Central High School for twenty-eight years until 2004 and later the Franklin County School System from 2001 to 2009. His service to TSSAA was also noteworthy; he was a member of the hall of fame selection committee, served as a TSSAA AAA Regional Coordinator from 1997 to 2004, and contributed as a TACA All-Star assistant football coach, among other roles. Cate's dedication to sports and education earned him numerous accolades, including the TSSAA A. F. Bridges Award as the 9th Athletic District Coach of the Year.

Al Cate's induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2010 was a testament to his impactful career — one marked by 673 victories across four sports, the mentorship of countless student-athletes, and unwavering service to the TSSAA. His legacy continues to inspire those in Tennessee's high school sports community.
