Joe D. Casey

Inducted 2008

Joe D. Casey's career, marked by his extensive contribution to high school sports, led to his deserved induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2008. Casey's journey began on July 31, 1926, setting the stage for a lifetime dedicated to athletics, both as a competitor and as an official.

His service as a TSSAA official spanned over two decades, from 1950 to 1974, during which he officiated in both baseball and basketball. His skills and fairness were particularly noted on the basketball court. Notably, Casey was selected to officiate at the Boys State Basketball Tournaments in 1960 and 1966, an acknowledgment of his expertise and integrity. His involvement wasn't limited to state-level competitions; he also worked numerous District and Region tournaments, proving his dedication and commitment to high school athletics in Tennessee.

Beyond his officiating, Casey's impact on sports in Tennessee was multifaceted. He served as Nashville's Police Chief from 1973 to 1989, demonstrating leadership both on and off the field. Moreover, his dedication saw him officiating junior high, high school games, and sometimes up to three games in a single day. His memorable officiating at games such as Pearl versus Father Ryan in 1965 and Stratford versus Cameron in 1968 further cemented his reputation.

Casey's athletic prowess was not confined to officiating. He was recognized as an outstanding athlete at North High School in Nashville and extended this passion into his founding of the Babe Ruth Baseball League in Nashville, showcasing his commitment to nurturing young talent. His athletic career also included playing five years of professional baseball and two years of professional basketball, alongside officiating in the Volunteer State Athletic Conference, Ohio Valley Conference, and A & I basketball games.

TSSAA Hall of Famer Tom Keysear once said about Casey, “For what it is worth, if I was a coach or if I had the power as Commissioner, you would be the first man I would assign in a crucial and pressure-packed ball game.” This esteem underscores Casey’s significant contribution to TSSAA and his unwavering commitment to sportsmanship and excellence.
