Bob Black

Bob Black, born on November 2, 1942, had a storied career in Tennessee high school athletics, culminating in his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2008. He served as a teacher and coach at Fulton High School from 1965 until his retirement, dedicating 43 years to nurturing young athletes. Under his guidance, the football team achieved remarkable success, winning TSSAA State Championships in 2003, 2004, and 2006, and finishing as the State Runner-Up in 2002. His teams also placed third in the State Tournament twice, marking a period of sustained excellence in football.

In addition to his coaching duties, Black contributed significantly as Fulton High School’s athletic director for 31 years, from 1976 to 2007. His leadership in this role was recognized when he was named Athletic Director of the Year by the TSSAA for the 2000-2001 school year. Furthermore, Black's commitment to sports extended beyond the school, as he also served as a TSSAA official for 38 years until 2007, officiating baseball games and shaping the experience for countless athletes.

Black's contributions to TSSAA extended into his work with umpire and referee development, acting as director and clinician of TSSAA Umpire Camps and Clinics for 15 years. This role underscored his profound influence on sportsmanship and the quality of athletic competitions throughout Tennessee.

His former student-athlete background at Fulton High School and Carson-Newman College, where he was acknowledged with several All-Conference, All-Area, and Little All-American titles, set a strong foundation for his coaching ethos. Black was not only celebrated within the TSSAA community but also recognized by his alma maters and local organizations, having been inducted into the Knoxville Sports Hall of Fame and the Carson-Newman College Sports Hall of Fame. The Fulton High School football field was named in his honor in 1986, a testament to his lasting legacy in high school sports within Tennessee.
