W. G. Siler

W.G. "Petie" Siler's distinguished career as a teacher and coach, spanning from 1916 to 1946, showcased a profound dedication to fostering athletic and personal growth in students across various Tennessee schools. Siler's coaching journey began at Knoxville Central High School in 1916, transitioning to Knoxville High School in 1919 where he led the football team to the 1920 TSSAA State Championship and the track & field team to victory in 1922. His tenure at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville between 1923 and 1924 involved coaching freshman sports including basketball, track & field, and football, demonstrating his versatile coaching skills.

Subsequently, Siler's role at LaFollette High School in 1924 set the stage for his long-lasting impact at Morristown High School from 1925 to 1952. Here, his coaching excellence was evident as he amassed a remarkable football record of 167-95-12. Under his guidance, Morristown's track & field teams clinched the TSSAA State Championships in 1927 and 1928. Moreover, he coached 11 boys' and girls' basketball teams to district or East Tennessee Championships.

Siler's influence extended beyond the field and court; he was instrumental in developing community activities and youth and high school intramural programs. His efforts to engage students in athletics were unparalleled. Recognition of his contributions came in various forms, including the naming of Morristown High School's gymnasium and football field after him in 1954 and 1998, respectively. His legacy was further honored through his 2004 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, an accolade that highlighted his exceptional service to TSSAA and dedication to sportsmanship and community involvement.
