Gordon Perry

Gordon Perry's illustrious career, culminating in his 2003 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame, is a testament to his dedication and service to high school sports in Tennessee. Born on December 17, 1936, Perry embarked on his professional journey as a teacher and coach in 1963, beginning at Trigg County High School in Cadiz, KY, before moving to Haywood High School in 1966. For six years, he nurtured young talents and instilled in them a love for sports.

In 1969, Perry transitioned into administration as the assistant principal at Haywood High School, a role he held for eight years. His leadership skills and passion for sports seamlessly blended into his work, leading to his eventual promotion to principal in 1977. For 22 years, Perry was at the helm of Haywood High School, during which he also took on the role of athletic director for 15 years (1977-1992).

Perry's service to the TSSAA was distinguished and impactful. In 1983, he joined the TSSAA Legislative Council, a position he held until 1999. Notably, from 1991 to 1999, Perry also served as the President of the TSSAA Legislative Council, guiding the organization through significant periods of growth and development.

Throughout his tenure at Haywood County High School, Perry's leadership contributed to the school achieving national recognition for excellence by the United States Department of Education and hosting the first Tennessee Academic Decathlon in 1986. Under his guidance, the school was named one of Tennessee's ten great schools in 1988.

Gordon Perry's awards include being named Statewide Athletic Director of the Year by the Tennessee Athletic Director Association in 1989 and receiving the NIAAA State Award of Merit in 1990 and 1993. His career was punctuated by his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2003, a fitting tribute to his considerable contributions to high school athletics in Tennessee.
