Billy Belew, born on October 1, 1931, forged a remarkable career in high school sports, culminating in his 2003 induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame. Belew began his illustrious journey in the realm of athletics as a player, showcasing his talent in baseball at Union University in Jackson, TN. Transitioning from player to educator, Belew devoted 19 years to teaching and coaching at Lexington High School and Paul G. Caywood School in Lexington, TN. His coaching tenure spanned various sports including varsity and junior varsity football and basketball, exemplifying his versatility and dedication to youth sports.

Beyond his role as an educator and coach, Belew made significant contributions as a TSSAA official from 1955, a testament to his long-standing commitment and service to Tennessee high school sports. His officiating career is marked by his involvement in crucial games – participating in TSSAA playoff games, bowl games, four TSSAA State Championship games, and three Clinic Bowls in football. His expertise was not limited to football; Belew also officiated in basketball and baseball, further illustrating his comprehensive understanding and impact on high school athletics.

In 2001, Belew took on the role of TSSAA Football Supervisor for the Southwest Officials’ Association, demonstrating his leadership and influence on the next generation of officials. His considerable efforts in recruiting officials during his coaching and teaching years speak volumes of his commitment to improving and maintaining the quality of high school sports officiating in Tennessee.

Belew’s tenure as a school superintendent/principal/coach for 12 years at Paul G. Caywood School underscores his multi-faceted contribution to education and sports. Under his leadership, the school was recognized as one of the ten most outstanding schools in Tennessee, a fitting accolade for his dedication to excellence in both academics and athletics.
