John McPherson

Inducted 2001

John A. McPherson, born on December 5, 1923, embarked on a distinguished career in sports that led to his induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2001. McPherson's journey in sports began with him officiating in the Nashville Recreation League, showcasing his dedication and skill in managing sports games right from the start. His exceptional ability as an official was soon recognized by higher sporting bodies, allowing him to work on the collegiate level for both the Southeastern Conference and the Ohio Valley Conference.

Apart from his achievements in officiating, McPherson also demonstrated his passion for sports by playing and managing baseball at the professional level for eight years, further exemplifying his multifaceted talent in the realm of athletics. However, it was his extraordinary service as a TSSAA official for 25 years, spanning from 1947 to 1972, that truly highlighted his commitment to high school sports.

McPherson's dedication to basketball was particularly remarkable. He officiated at numerous District and Region Tournaments, contributing significantly to the development of young athletes. His proficiency and fairness as an official also led him to be selected for the 1954 TSSAA State Basketball Tournament, a testament to his high level of expertise and respect in the field.

John A. McPherson's legacy was not just about being an official but about being a devoted servant to high school athletics through the TSSAA. His induction into the TSSAA Hall of Fame in 2001 was a fitting tribute to his lifelong contribution to sports, especially considering his service concluded decades before. Unfortunately, McPherson passed away in September 2006, but his impact on TSSAA and the lives of countless young athletes continues to be remembered and celebrated.
